Report

Thanks Peter Foulsum for providing this report with additional input from Tim and Mick.

Rosebud Yacht Club did a superb job of hosting the 2008 Mosquito State Titles. Nothing was too much effort for the dedicated team in the patrol boats, club house, kitchen, car park and on the beach.  The club tractor run by Garry Purcell got a mighty workout transporting yachts and trailers to the waters edge, retrieving and parking the trailers and even lining all the trailers up at the waters edge on the final day ready for loading. They even booked some pretty impressive weather for the entire weekend.   A big thank you goes to the club members for all their efforts.

Neil Joiner won the MkI title from Bob Wilson with Tim Shepperd a very close third place.  Mick and Tom Floyd had a tighter tussle to win the MkII division from Col McEwan and Sarah Floyd with Brian and Adam Gristwood in third place. Congratulations to all skippers and crews.

The 18 MkI (cat rigged) and 6 MkII (sloop rigged) Mozzies had a full 3 days of racing in relatively light wind conditions.  Darryn Kopp drove all the way from Adelaide again for the second year in a row to compete.  Darryn was awarded status of honorary Victorian for his efforts. Darryn even tried to become a permanent resident by losing his car key in the sand. There were also many kilometers traveled by country enthusiasts from Gippsland Lakes, Ballarat, Bendigo and Lake Boga.   Local competition was well represented by Lindsay Thorn from the host club, Simon Clavin from McCrae Y.C. next door and a swarm of 6 Mozzies from Somers Y.C. just over the hill.

The first race on Saturday afternoon started with a 10 knot North East sea breeze which dropped away to almost nothing on the second lap. The OOD quickly shortened the course and then both Darryn Kopp and Bob Wilson in turn found themselves being swept into the finish boat by the incoming tide.  This unfortunately resulted in a DNF for both and allowed Neil Joiner to claim the first race. Col McEwan and Sarah Floyd in the sloop rigged division were straight out of the blocks with a clear win despite a late challenge from Phil and Anthony Warren-Smith who used the tide and a shore ‘zephyr’ to great advantage to take second place. We then stopped for lunch and waited for a sea breeze to arrive.

At 4.30pm we headed out for the second race in 8 knots which increased gradually until we ended up with a solid trapezing breeze to finish. This time Bob and Darryn made no mistakes, broke away early and stayed there to the finish. Garry Johnstone and Peter Nikitin also had good races and crossed the line not far behind. In the MkII division again Col McEwan and Sarah Floyd led the race from start to finish with nobody getting close enough to challenge them.  Mick and Tom Floyd were second.

Peter Nikitin had been practicing his starts and was keen to avoid the OCS results from last year.  Unfortunately Peter had an OCS in the first race and had to re-start the race losing 3 minutes and having a start with the sloop rigged division.  He had a clean result sheet after this minor embarrassment although we all thought that he was trying to take home the clap hanger award for the second consecutive year.

Sunday morning started with light conditions again but was expected to die completely in the afternoon. Fortunately the OOD was able to run 2 back to back races just before the wind started to fade. In the MkIs these races were dominated by Neil Joiner, Darryn Kopp and Peter Nikitin, with no-one else able to break into this group. Neil took the gun in both races, putting him in a very good overall position.

In the MkIIs Mick and Tom Floyd won both races, just in front of Col and Sarah leaving the Sloop rigged division wide open.  Philip and Anthony Warren-Smith fought it out with Brian and Adam Gristwood for a third placing each.

As forecast by the OOD’s crystal ball, the wind died out in the afternoon and with a number of postponements the afternoons racing was finally abandoned at 4:30 pm. This allowed a throng of Mozzie “experts” to swarm over Trevor Armstrong’s yacht and completely re-design his set-up.  This worked well and made his Mozzie go so fast that it broke a rudder on Monday.

Monday morning dawned with a consistent 15 – 20 knots NE breeze which allowed us to finish the event with two very enjoyable fast-paced races. The wind and current made it advantageous to tack up the shore and then out to the windward mark. Some boats were seen sailing the wrong side of the breakers to try for an advantage – something that only works if you don’t actually hit the sand.

In the MkIs Bob Wilson, Neil Joiner and Tim Shepperd broke away early and spent the first race swapping places, with Bob eventually finishing first ahead of Neil. Mick and Tom Floyd continued their winning streak, winning the start then cruising in a minute and a half ahead of Col then Brian.

In the final race for the MkIs, Bob once again got away from the start while Peter and Garry were the only ones to give chase initially. Neil and Tim gradually picked their way out through the fleet to finally catch Peter and Garry on the second-last windward leg, and then continue on to finish one second apart with Tim snatching second place by shooting the line (very slowly!).

Whilst Neil had already clinched the MkI title in the previous race the MkII contest was a much tighter affair. This was made easier for Mick and Tom though as Col and Sarah took an unprovoked swim during the last race. This allowed Brian to pick up a second  and Gordon and Kate Hyde took third.

Col won the clap hanger award for that capsize – pulling the wrong rope!

In the MkI division a ‘B’ fleet was created after 4 heats by dividing the whole fleet in half.  There was then a series result calculated for these boats in addition to the overall result. This resulted in a win for Garry Johnstone, followed by Lindsay Thorn in second place and Rob Lott in third.  Hopefully all these sailors will continue to improve and be in the top 10 next year.
