St Leonards YC – 7/9 March 2009
What a great weekend of racing! The winds were near perfect and the seven races were run to schedule. Thanks go to St Leonards YC, and race officer Glen, for running the series so well. Congratulations to Mick and Tom Floyd in the Sloops and Neil Joiner in the cats on their wins, and well done to everyone else for your part in making the event an all round success. We had 30 entries this year, which is a good turn-out. The more competitors take part the better the racing is for everyone, so encourage anyone you know to come along next time and who knows, maybe we’ll make it back into the 40s one day.

The 2009 Victorian Mosquito State Titles were this year conducted by St Leonards Y.C. on the Bellarine Peninsula located between Queenscliff and Portarlington. The event was shared with the Arrows and the Windrushes. As usual the very keen arrived on Friday and the rest turned up on Saturday morning. This year we were blessed with a contingent of South Australian Mozzie sailors who traveled either from Adelaide (Darryn Kopp) or from Lake Bonnie Y.C. (Peter and David Dunk and Steve Thomas) for the racing. Hopefully we will see an increase in the interstate numbers again for 2010. There were also country entrants from Gippsland Lakes, Ballarat, Bendigo and Lake Boga.
The grassed lawns around the clubhouse provided fantastic space for rigging and storage and the huge parking area meant that everyone and their trailers were well catered for. Care had to be exercised underneath the gum trees and more than one Mozzie came to an abrupt halt whist being maneuvered around the rigging area. The tightly packed sand on the beach also made launching very easy.
The 22 MkI (cat rigged) and 8 MkII (sloop rigged) Mozzies sailed seven races in ideal conditions of 15 to 20 knots for the first 2 days of racing and a 15 knot slowly reducing to approximately 5 knots for the final race conducted on Monday morning. Winds were such that the windward leg ran predominantly parallel to the beach. Mondays race was run with less wind and a little more wave pattern than we had encountered during the previous days, which added to the challenge. As was the case in the previous 2 years, everyone needed to take the strong tidal influence into consideration and many places were either gained or lost depending on their decisions. The first start of the regatta had 6 knots of current pushing the fleet over the line resulting in two general recalls. This seemed to be enough for everyone to get the idea!
For the second year in a row Neil Joiner won the MkI title and Mick Floyd won the Mk II title. It was great to see Shannon Wilson back racing after his accident and injuries and great to see him take 2nd place on equal points with Neil. This result was only decided on the final downwind leg of the final race where Neil came out ahead to take the title. S.A. visitor Darryn Kopp was a very close third place. Mick and Tom Floyd had a clean sweep in the MkII division and didn’t need to race the last scheduled race. Mick did point out that even though the results indicated an easy series, they were not always in the lead and had to fight to get each and every win. After sailing well to win the final race Tom and Peter Cobden finished 2nd overall – an excellent result for Tom who was also the best performing Junior skipper at the titles. Gordon Hyde and Sarah Floyd finished 3rd in the MkIIs.
In the MkI division ‘B’ fleet John Guymer won with Colin McEwan 2nd and Clint Burgess 3rd. Hopefully these sailors will continue to improve and be in the top 10 next year.
This year there were a large number of contenders for the Clap hanger award. Notably Peter Nikitin again was nominated for the award for multiple capsizes and having his car stolen and then remembering that he had left it at the caravan park. James Pearse was nominated for not tying a knot in the traveler car rope and losing all the ball bearings over the side. Bill Pepping was nominated for capsizing in the race with the lightest winds then realizing he hadn’t fitted his righting rope or signed on. Most of the fleet deserved the award, at various stages, for taking turns at claiming ownership of a large raft of kelp that liked to attach itself to centreboards, and which apparently stayed on the course for the whole weekend!
A big thank you goes to the St Leonards Y.C. for effortlessly undertaking and successfully conducting the titles on their lovely stretch of water. A big thank you also goes to the volunteers who catered for the masses of hungry and thirsty sailors and supporters.
