2025-26 Mk1 State Titles
Day one of Victorian mossie cat rigged states…….
Well what can I say, it’s like a riding a bucking bull to say the least.
Racing commenced at 2pm with 3 races. Wind was 17 to 22 knots with large sea state at about 1.5 meters to 2 meters waves with short sharp chop.
Racing was wild. Hot competition up the front with 2nd 3rd and 4th constantly changing places.
Some had a port / starboard issues at top mark, some were digging the bows in to the front beam and some were getting a transom slap causing the skipper getting bucked of.
Possible candidates for clap hanger……
Andrew on bandit = capsize
Gary on bees knees = capsize
Tim Shepperd = for not being here due to holiday
Micheal Anthony who rocked up, with no sailing bag and sail, went back to Bendigo to get them and back again.
Day two…. coming soon.
Day 2…..
My God, what can I say…..
After a sleepless night from wind (27 knots) and halyards slapping masts we were a bit slow getting up.
The wind was still up hovering about 22knots with the sea state aas still a bucking bull.
We didn’t want to wait around so we had our AGM .
As soon meeting finished, wind has dropped to about 15 knots….we are racing.
Wind was good but the bucking bull was out and about.
First race we were so eager that some were OCS. Wind shifts and high sea state made some people stay inshore. The finish was so hot that it was seconds between finishes
Fleet was a little smaller by the 2nd race.
We raced so hard that Pete Kiely traveller car blew its balls and Jaime Zizman broke a foot strap. The joker was in the lead for a short time but was defeated by Shannon.
3rd race…. well we were all stuffed but racing continues.
Wind has swung around that the top mark mark on the reef and wiped out by the breakers.
Brett Rowe was a one hit wonder, was doing so well to get to the top mark with the top 5 boats till he tipped it in.
Pete keily tried to catch up by getting out on trap on the reach…..well that didn’t last long, stuffed in the nose and body slammed the bow and dinted the side and cracked the deck along with a sore body.
Alot of sheet in and alot of sheet out.
Coming in I think we aged a little more with sore muscles, sore backs
Early night I think. Hopfully lighter day tomorrow…
Stay tuned.
DAY 3…..
We asked the wind gods for lighter winds.
We got what we asked but didn’t say what direction. No direction at all. It just went in circles at about 5 knots.
The racing course was out further than previous days to get constant wind. Some were slow getting off shore and were late for the start. Race started.
60 degrees windshift halfway up the beat made things tricky. Then the reach ended up as a run as the wind died out. Except for the front runners who hogged all the remaining wind.
Race was abandoned, and we restarted.
Restarted the Race.
Again the wind shifted not long after start, and back and forth with huge windshifts. Then 15 knot winds from every direction made things interesting. If you were in the right spot at the right time it was smooth sailing literally flat out on trap with dead flat water on a reach was a fantastic feeling.
But there was a problem. A couple of diving boats with some markers out was right where we wanted to go and had to go around them.
As the front runners finished the wind died and swirled around making it difficult for the rest of the fleet to finish.
Waiting for the final race the wind was swirling around, we couldn’t rest as we were constantly tacking. Race was called off and in shore we went.
Well done to all. We had all kinds of weather and sea state over the weekend.
Congratulations to Shannon Wilson who won the mossie state title.

Thanks to Altona YC for hosting the Victorian Mosquito State Titles. Done amazing job with race management and all the volunteers involved. Thanks again.
2025-26 Spinnaker State and National Titles
In a weekend with a forecast of almost no wind at all we finished up with a complete five race series in an Autumn seabreeze on both days. We did have to wait until after 2pm but it was worth it. There was some good close racing at the pointy end between Neil Joiner, Gary Maskiell and Jack Felsenthal. Neil proved the most consistent with 3 wins and Gary took 2nd from Jack by a tie-break.
Kudos goes to Shane Kershaw who traveled all the way from Canberra and Philip Warren-smith who made the journey from Melbourne. Well done!
